According to Orwell, the story in allegoric language and symbols  tells  about the reasons led to the Russian Revolution of 1917 and then into the era of Stalinism in the former Soviet Union. Orwell, as a democratic socialist, was a critic of Russian regiment and Joseph Stalin.

The name of the poorly — run  farm was Manor Farm. The real Manor Farm is located near Willingdon, England.Willingdon and Jevington are the  settlements in the Wealden District of East Sussex, England. The two villages are in one mile (1.6 km) south to Polegate.

Old Major taught animals the song «Beasts of England». The  anthem of the Animal Farm,  originally was the famous hymn, The Internacionale. It is also an allusion  to Mary Shelly’s song «Men of England».The melody of the song is described in the novel  as  a combination of famous songs ‘La Cucaracha» and «Oh my darling Clementine».

The owner of the farm before the rebellion was irresponsible and alcoholic farmer Mr.Jones. He is a fictional character. Mr. Jones is overthrown by the animals of his farm, who are an allegory of the Russian Bolsheviks and liberal revolutionaries.

There are «Seven Commandments of Animalism» in the story. It is an allusion to the Soviet government’s laws in order to gain control of  peoples’ beliefs and personal life.

The original commandments are:

1. Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy.
2. Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend.
3. No animal shall wear clothes.
4. No animal shall sleep in a bed.
5. No animal shall drink alcohol.
6. No animal shall kill any other animal.
7. All animals are equal.

The Battle of the Cowshed was the infamous fighting between an opposition of  the notorious Mr.Jones and the  animals . In the midst of the conflict, a lot of heroic acts happened but they were soon  forgotten because of  Napoleon’s censorship and propaganda.

The pigs pushed themselves to positions of leadership and set aside special food items, exceptionally for their personal health. Minding an unsuccessful attempt by Mr. Jones and his companions to retake the farm (later dubbed the «Battle of the Cowshed»), the pigs  announced their plans to modernize the farm.

Snowball announces his plans to modernize the farm by building a windmill. Napoleon argues against this idea, their disagreement is culminated in Snowball’s chasing. Later  Napoleon was  declared  a supreme commander.

The central tenet of Animalism is «All  animals are Equal». Later the Seven Commandments, which were supposed to keep order within the  Animal Farm  and preventing them from following the humans’ evil habits, were changed. Orwell tried to convey the idea  how easily political dogma can be turned into propaganda.

The animals worked hard using all  their strength to  build the windmill. It is also  an allegory of hope for the best future.

Boxer did a large share of the physical labour on the farm and got injured.  In a book Boxer  is a symbol of Stahanov’s movement.

When Boxer was injured, Napoleon sold him to a local knaker  and bought  some whisky for money. Squealer published a touching note, falsifying Boxer’s death.

Napoleon made an alliance with human beings in the end of the story.  The pigs and people started playing cards, flattering each other while cheating during  the game. When the animals were watching  the pigs and human beings, they couldn’t longer distinguish the two of them.
